Ticker Symbols for Canadian Stocks
Description
Canadian stock ticker symbols are mostly alphabetical, though there is sometimes added punctuation to denote special classes of stock. Stock symbols can be from 1 to 5 characters in length.
To get quotes for Canadian exchanges it is necessary to insert the exchange abbreviation followed by ':' before the symbol. Here are some examples of Canadian common stock ticker symbols:
Canadian option symbols are preceded with a '+' (plus), with the name of the exchange forming the next part of the symbol. Next comes a ':' (colon), with the option symbol forming the remainder of the complete symbol.
- TSE:CCL = Celanese Canada Inc.
- VSE:CLV = Clearly Canadian Beverage Corp.
- ASE:ILS = Interlock Consolidated Enterprises
- CANOTC:EDIS = Euro Disney Lasn S.C.A.
Preferred stocks are special issues of some stocks. The designation does not necessarily refer to the desirability of the stock. Preferred stocks have a trailing '-', followed by optional "class" letters. For example:
- TSE:AL-E = Alcan Aluminum Limited
- ME:QT-D = Quebec Telephone
Some stocks have multiple "classes", such as Class A or Class B. These classes are represented with a '.' followed by the class letter.
- ME:QBR.A = Quebecor Inc. Class A
- TSE:LDM.B = Laidlaw Inc. Class B
